Luthiers (guitarmakers) From Puerto Rico
Poems to Guitar and  Andrés Segovia
Guillermo composed and interpreted his music on a guitar, his constant companion. This could be be expected: Hometown Quebradillas was a guitar town...well known luthier William Del Pilar grew up together with the other William (Guillermo). Also, among his friends were Fidencio Diaz and Manuel Velasquez, both world class guitarmakers from Puerto Rico. Guillermo at one time or another owned guitars made by the 3 previously named guitarmakers. Another friend was Manuel Gayol, a famed guitarist from Puerto Rico who gave many concerts abroad.

In spite of his close asociation with guitarists, guitarmakers and the fact that he was a guitarist, Guillermo almost never put his guitar compositions on paper nor did he publish any guitar compositions in his lifetime.

On about 1953 guitarist Andres Segovia visited Puerto Rico and his host took him to dinner to a restaurant (El Centauro) where Guillermo was playing the guitar and singing with his former student, his other "son", the now legendary Miguel Alcaide. After hearing them play many work by Guillermo at the restaurant, Segovia invited Guillermo and Miguel to visit and play more for him at his hotel room the next day. There Segovia made two requests to his new friends:  That  Guillermo write down some works and send them to him and that Alcaide go to Spain to finish his guitar studies with him, at Segovia's expense, if necessary. Needless to say, Guillermo never sent any music to Segovia (due to publisher related problems with Peermusic) and Alcaide never went to study with Segovia.

Alcaide did go on to become one of the great guitarists dedicated to popular and "trio" music and the classical guitar. Many consider Alcaide (now deseased, but can be heard on the many comercial recordings and movies he made) the best "Trio" guitarist of his time.

Guillermo did leave a large collection of  recordings (solos, with Alcaide and others) of his music where he plays the guitar. Now you know why Andres Segovia (and other guitarists) never played Requiem para un artista, (MP3 452k).or Serenata a Isul (MP3 154k) or La luciernaga (MP3-662k ) all played here by Guillermo Venegas .

Poems

Poema #23: La Luna de Puerto Rico - Ella i Yo:
El brocal de mi gitarra
lo atraviesan seis caminos-
.....
Poem by Guillermo Venegas dedicated to Andres Segovia

A MI AMIGO DON ANDRÉS SEGOVIA
(El angel de la guitarra)

Nadie al instrumento moro
le arrancó mayor tesoro,
que vuestras manos de estrellas.

Nadie supo, Don Andrés,
cual sus manos de marqués
trataría con tanto acierto.

Vos la llevo hasta el concierto
la colmo de señorías.

Y de su alma diría
que jamas tuvo otra novia,
el mundo dar no podría,
aunque quisiera algún día
otro Don Andrés Segovia.

TO MY FRIEND DON ANDRÉS SEGOVIA
(The angel of the guitar)

Nobody from the moor instrument
has a greater treasure plucked
than your hands full of stars.

No one could predict, Don Andrés
how your noble hands'
treatment be so right.

Thee took to it to the concert,
overflowed it with acclaims.

And of his soul I would say
it never had another fiancée,
the world could not give,
even if it wanted some day
another Don Andrés.
